There's something about Alonso that somehow appeals in spite of his lack of recent success. It's a bit odd in some respects, because almost any other driver in his situation would be damned by the fans. Hamilton can't so much as fart without people screaming for his head but Alonso just rolls along enjoying his very much older life. His teammate is ahead in points but everyone hates that guy. Russell, for all his success this season, is another guy a lot of people don't like. Why? The other drivers seem to like him or he wouldn't be a director in the GPDA; or perhaps that's a fool's errand and someone has to do it, so George shouldered the burden. I don't know. I wish Alonso had a car worthy of him. I have my favorite drivers, of course, but I will never not celebrate seeing Alonso on the podium.

From the outside at least, Alonso has always seemed to be his own worst enemy. Undeniable talent and speed tinged with a tendency to ruffle too many feathers and chase opportunities elsewhere rather than create them wherever he is by working cohesively with his colleagues. Schumacher was the master of building his team around him, to suit him, a skill that Alonso would have done well to try to emulate in his early days. If he had done, he would certainly have more than two championships to his name.
